"School to Work"
Mentoring activities for High School Students

HVT&C will address the subject of "School to Work" and the
opportunities for employers and businesses to provide meaningful mentoring
activities for high school students. Mr. Rik Flynn, School to Work Coordinator
for Ulster County BOCES, will be our guest speaker.
This meeting will be held on Wednesday,
June 11th, from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm, at
New World Home Cooking
on Route 212 in Saugerties.
4 to 5 pm Social hour and networking
5 to 6 pm Rik Flynn presentation
Entrepreneurs and both small and large businesses can provide learning
opportunities within their workplace that can provide rewarding experiences
for the mentor and the student. Rik Flynn will include an overview of
Ulster County's involvement in various "School to Work" activities
and several types of programs in which work sites may provide both paid
and unpaid work experiences sanctioned by the New York State's Departments
of Education and Labor.
The New York State Learning Standards for Career Development and Occupational
Studies (CDOS) will be referenced in his remarks. Rik will also address
a specific program offered by Ulster County BOCES, particularly relevant
to members of the Hudson Valley Technology & Commerce Organization,
in which exceptionally mature students may engage in the independent study
of a career path during their senior year of high school.
Rik has been an educator at Ulster County BOCES for the past twenty-six
years. During this period, he has been a classroom special education instructor,
he was on special assignment as Assistant Director of the Mid-Hudson Teacher
Center while at Ulster BOCES, and has served as Acting Coordinator for
the Ulster County School To Work Partnership.
Rik received an undergraduate degree from Marist College and Master of
Science degree in Education from SUNY, New Paltz. He is a current board
member and past president of the Ulster County School to Work Partnership,
a member of the Chamber of Commerce of Ulster County and serves on various
youth-related committees in the Mid-Hudson area. Rik holds permanent teaching
certifications for Kindergarten through Grade 12, in English and Social
Studies grades 7 - 12, and in Special Education.
This meeting is sponsored by Hudson Valley Technology and Commerce, a
not-for-profit organization working to improve the technology infrastructure
in the Hudson Valley.
Admission is $5.00, Free for HVT&C members and anyone joining
HVT&C at this event. There will be opportunity for networking,
questions and answers before and after the presentation, and light snacks
will be served.
